Hey Shani,
Do I have to buy a Stanley Cup? Typically I don’t hop onto trends, but this one is SO huge that I’m wondering if they’re really that great and I’m missing something?
Hey You,
Those who haven’t identified their own inherent value will seek their specialness elsewhere, in this case through the acquisition of trendy “it” products. In extreme cases you’ll see people actually collect something like Stanley cups (you have one mouth how many of these do you need) as a means to receive some kind of perceived superiority, praise, or belonging. Essentially those who don’t feel special will try to buy their way into a personality. No, you do not need a Stanley Cup.
As a kid I never had a Starter Jacket, Dr. Martens, or a Dooney & Bourke purse and yet somehow, miraculously, I persist. I make my own money now and I still don’t own these things, as they no longer hold the sway over the collective psyche that they once did—such is the life cycle of literally all trends. The trendy buzz ringing in one’s ear is a natural thing to listen to, because all of us like feeling like we belong. If someone tells you you’re a $40 cup away from acceptance, my guess is you’ll throw down some coin. But sit with that buzz a little longer, question its urgency, and I think you’ll reconnect with your sense of calm and logic rather quickly. Stay hydrated though, that part’s cool.
